RMDRC NEWS: Happy New Year Dinosaur Fans! The last year has been full of fun, discovery and learning for all of us here at the Dinosaur Resource Center. We've had great finds in the field, new specimens created in our paleo lab, and dinosaurs shipped all over the world from Woodland Park. Visitors to RMDRC have surpassed our expectations! It's amazing the number of people we've had the opportunity to share our dinosaur knowledge with, you included! Colorado Kids FREE Day was a huge success, with hundreds of kids from the area getting an opportunity to see our fabulous museum specimens. Special thanks to the Gordon Jackson Foundation for sponsoring this special event. For a new year's resolution, we
invite you to become a member of the Dino Club to feed your dinosaur
appetite. In addition to unlimited admission to the museum for a full
year, you get to come to some great member parties, among other perks.
The first member party planned for 2006
is the unveiling of the Polycotylus. The Polycotylus is a short neck
Plesiosaur that we've been working feverishly on for the past few months
to get ready for the Tuscon Fossil Show the end of January. It's ready
to go! Dino Club members will get to come to a special invitation only
unveiling the evening of February 24th. We're expecting Plesiosaur
experts from around the country to participate in our mini symposium on
Saturday, February 25. The speakers include Ken Carpenter from the
Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Glenn Storrs from the Cincinnati
Museum, Larry Martin and Dave Burnam from Kansas University. The talks
will begin at 10 am and end with a round table of all the speakers at 4
pm. These talks are FREE for Dino Club members. Our traveling exhibition, "Savage Ancient
Seas" is on the road to the Museum of Idaho and Bermuda Underwater
Exploration Institute. In addition to the traveling exhibit, our
specimens are going to museums and facilities in Florida, Georgia,
Texas, New York, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, California, and
Connecticut just to name a few. The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource
Center is proud to offer Woodland Park and the Pikes Peak Region a world
class dinosaur facility. We look forward to continuing to "WOW" you in
the future. We all thank you for your continued support of our
paleontological efforts. Tracie Bennitt |
CURATOR CORNER:
News from the Lab: We are EXCITED about the completion of the 1st-ever cast assembly of the type specimen Trinacromerum bonneri. This polycotylid plesiosaur (marine reptile) project has been nearly three years in the making. The dramatic and unusual specimen is over 15 feet in length, 12 feet in width, with a skull over 3 feet long. This streamlined, speedster of the ocean has vicious jaws and powerful paddles. At the end of January, Mike and JJ Triebold (RMDRC owners) will be taking this specimen to the 2006 Tucson Fossil Show, in Tucson, Arizona, for a special exclusive showing. In February, this specimen will go on display at the RMDRC, so watch for event details soon!
We are assembling the skull of our new Texas Tylosaur, “Sophie”. This new Tylosaur is exquisitely preserved and may provide further insight to this group of marine reptiles. The “Sophie” skull will also be exhibited at the 2006 Tucson Fossil Show, in Tucson, Arizona.
Also, January 9th, the massive 17 foot Archelon, a Cretaceous sea turtle, exhibit will end. So, be sure to make plans to see this impressive exhibit before it goes extinct.
Cheers, Anthony Maltese posing with the Polycotylus |
