Happy New Year  2008

It is with mixed emotions that we say good-bye to 2007 and begin a brand new year. 2007 was a very good year for the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. With 3 years behind us, we no longer consider ourselves a new business. It has been a learning experience for us all. Thanks to all of you, we survived those crucial years of establishing RMDRC as a premier attraction in the Pikes Peak Region. With your encouragement, suggestions and support, we look forward to 2008 being our best year yet!

December started off with the Paint the Town Pink parade and the lighting of the Woodland Park Christmas tree at the Cultural Center on Dec.1st. We also had the lighting of our palm trees in front of the RMDRC. The palm tree lighting was the realization of one of RMDRC goals. We have had this planned since our opening in 2004. Some things are worth waiting for!

Our 3rd annual Kid’s Free Day was held Dec. 28th. As expected, we had a record breaking crowd of excited kid’s through our doors. There were many first time visitors and just as many returning for a 2nd and even 3rd time.  Our Visitor Experience Guides were on hand in full force for tours, story times and answering hundreds of questions. Cool Science performed two standing room only educational shows.

Our Triebold Paleontology lab crew is busy preparing the exhibits we will be taking to the world’s largest gem, mineral and fossil show in Tucson, Arizona. This event starts January 30 and continues through Feb.15. TPI has been participating in this show since 1989. This is an event where we have the opportunity to show off our new skeletons to many museum representatives from all over the world. One of the items you’ll see being mounted in the lab is our new 15 foot Archelon turtle. This is also where the buyers for our Prehistoric Paradise store purchase many of the original fossil and jewelry items we sell. Look for many new items to be added to the store around the 3rd week in February.

We are preparing for our participation in the Walking With Dinosaurs shows at the Colorado Springs World Arena. Our own Carla Deemer and Geri Lebold will be at the arena during the shows, January 23-27 with a display of skulls and skeletons. Be sure to buy your tickets for this world class show, see Carla’s column below for details on purchasing discounted tickets! Stop by our booth and say hello to the girls at the show.

January weather is always difficult to predict. For that reason, we don’t have any regularly scheduled events. However, we are working on our calendar for 2008. Of course we will be seeing the return of our most popular events and coming up with some new ones. Please send your ideas to us at info@rmdrc.com. We look forward to seeing you soon at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center!

Sincerely,
JJ Triebold
President, RMDRC

From the Education Desk

Welcome to 2008!  I’d like to say thank you to all of the children and adults who came to RMDRC in December and made an ornament for our holiday tree.  All of the designs are truly wonderful!  We hope you enjoyed making not only the decoration for the museum tree, but that the ornament you made to take home will be a special remembrance of RMDRC.  The ornament you made for our tree is a reminder of how special all of you are to us at the museum.  Thank you for sharing your marvelous talents with us.

We are very proud of our educational opportunities at RMDRC.  One of these is the fact that you can watch us work in the lab and see specimens in different stages of restoration.  The restoration process is when we sculpt the missing parts with epoxy putty or a similar material after we have removed the fossil from the surrounding rock matrix.  We then make a mold from silicone using the original specimen and cast an exact copy using resin.  The final process is to trim the cast, weld the framework on which to place the cast skeleton, and paint the completed specimen.  It is now ready to be put either in our museum or sent to the many museums throughout the world where our casts are shown.

If you have not done so in awhile please come and visit us and see all the new things we are doing.  If you are a frequent visitor there is always something new for you see.  I would love to talk to you about our new discoveries.  Please e-mail or call me on the phone if you have a question or comment.  Don’t forget to take some extra time to see our great Hands On area for the kids, the amazing Cretoxyrhina Shark display or the Apatosaurus we are working on.

Here’s to an exciting, fun and educational 2008.  We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

Happy New Year from Triebold Paleontology, INc.

2008 is starting off as busy as 2007 ended for the folks working in the TPI lab.

Repairs are being finished up and new graphics and specimens added to "Savage Ancient Seas," our nationwide traveling exhibition which is going back on the road this month.  If you have friends and relatives in the Norwalk, CT area, be sure to have them visit the exhibit opening at Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk on January 18th.

Work is progressing on the Apatosaurus as well as a number of new specimens that I'll be taking to the Tucson Fossil Show the first of February.
Our exhibit is set up at the Inn Suites in the Ball Room.  If you're in town, stop by and say "Hi."

We're looking forward to a busy and successful year at TPI.
Best Wishes to you and your family!

From the Lab

The lab is busy as always this winter, but we're making great progress on a number of new exhibits and specimens. Preparation is continuing on "Big Ed", and Edmontosaurus annectens collected from the Hell Creek formation of South Dakota in 2000. We laid out the leg bones recently, and discovered the hip socket will be over 10 feet high. We're also working on "ORM", a Tylosaurus kansasensis. I'm just finishing the tail now, however it appears to show at least 3 separate bite marks from the small shark Squalicorax falcatus.

New specimens are coming for display as well. We recently completed the tiny Ichthyornis dispar, a seagull sized bird with teeth from the Niobrara Chalk of Kansas. A few new cretaceous sea turtles are on their way to completion as well. Come by and see the progress soon!
