I hope you
took the time to attend the fabulous
“Walking with Dinosaurs” show at the
World Arena. It was awe-inspiring! We want to thank the World Arena staff
for allowing the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur
Resource Center to be part of this
experience. We had a special treat with backstage passes that allowed us to
get up close and personal with the stars of the show. This show is truly a
huge production and we were privileged to be a part of it! We met many new
people who didn’t know about us and it was great to get a chance to
introduce ourselves to a new group of future visitors to
RMDRC.
Thanks to Carla, Geri and staff for all of their hard work.

The staff at
RMDRC
is busy planning our events for the coming months. As a member of the newly
formed Woodland Retail Association,
we will be involved in several new outdoor events this summer. It is the
goal of the WRA
to bring new visitors to Woodland Park for fun, family events.
WRA is working with
the organizers of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb
to bring some of the events to Woodland Park this summer. In addition, the
WRA will be
expanding their participation in the
Celebrate Freedom
motorcycle rally. Live bands, more booths and a biker
rodeo for adults and kids are planned. A music festival is also in the
works. Check the website in the spring for more details,
www.discoverwoodland.com.
February is
the kickoff month for Dinoart 2008.

From the Education Desk
Happy February! There is a lot happening
this month and one of the big events around
the world is
Darwin
Day Celebration…..an International
Recognition of Science and Humanity. The objective of
Darwin Day
Celebration is to encourage a worldwide
celebration of Science and Humanity every
year on or near February 12, Darwin’s
birthday. It was founded on the premise
that science is an international language
that speaks to all people in very similar
ways. Science is acquired through human
curiosity and ingenuity. It is our most
reliable knowledge system. Evolution via
genetic variation and natural selection,
introduced by Darwin, has become the central
organizing principle in biology. In
addition, evolution also plays a central
role in astronomy, where it refers to the
way that stars, galaxies and the entire
universe change over time. Darwin has
become an internationally acclaimed figure
whose influence on progressive modern
thought is profound.
Darwin’s
200th birthday will
occur on February 12, 2009 and it will also
be the 150th anniversary of his
book,
The Origin of Species.
During the 2009 celebration a working
replica of The Beagle, the ship
Darwin sailed between 1831 and 1836, will
sail with a crew of students who will
undertake scientific research and
environmental monitoring. It will be
mentored by science professionals who hope
to inspire a new generation of scientists
along with celebrating and promoting the
life and work of Charles Darwin. For more
information go to their website at:
www.thebeagleproject.com/Darwin2009.html
Some other dates to celebrate this month
are: Winifred Goldring
who was born
Feb. 1, 1888 and was a paleontologist and
geologist. She became the first woman
elected as president of the Paleontological
Society in 1949, James Joyce, the author of
“Ulysses”, was born Feb. 2 (which is also
Groundhog Day), Charles Lindberg, who made
the first solo flight across the Atlantic in
1927, was born on Feb. 4, 1902, Abraham
Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809 (the same
day as Charles Darwin) and we celebrate
President’s Day on Feb. 19.
Please take some time this month and visit
us here at the museum and see the exciting
specimens we are working on in the lab.

From
Triebold Paleontology, Inc.
Greetings from Tucson!
It's that time of year again when we head south to Tucson to the
Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.
While you folks are all having fun in the snow here in Colorado,
we'll be basking in the Ball Room at the Inn Suites Hotel with our
fossil display!
If you have friends or relatives in the area, be sure to have them
drop in to see us.
We'll be taking the new "Protostega gigas" marine turtle as our
centerpiece this year.
It's quite impressive up close with a 15 foot flipper span!
The Dino Art 2008 theme is "Savage Ancient
Seas" to tie in with our wonderful traveling exhibit as well as
the release of National Geographic's "Sea Monsters: A
Prehistoric Adventure." We're hoping to get some great entries
from our contestants this year, with the winning entries
traveling throughout the country with "Savage Ancient Seas."
This will provide a tremendous amount of exposure for those
aspiring paleo artists. So, get out those pencils and paints and
start drawing!
I'm also pleased to announce that Paul Hudson has agreed to be our
guest Paleo Artist for Dino Art 2008.
Paul is from Savannah College of Art and Design, one of the leading
graphics schools in the country.
He is currently working on projects with TPI to bring a
dromaeosaurus and oviraptor skeleton flesh!
They will be quite amazing when they're completed. He also has an
extensive background working with graphics with NASA.
I'll have more information on him in the next newsletter.
I think you'll find him quite entertaining and informative to meet
in June.
So, have a great time in the snow while we're suffering in Tucson!

From the
Lab
It's that time of year again: Early February is when the Tucson
Gem and Mineral show opens, the world's largest. We'll have a
great display featuring our newest specimens. Stop by if you're
in the neighborhood and say hello! We'll have the following new
critters on display: Ichthyornis,
Raptor trackways, and the turtles Protostega
and Prionocheleys.
Just
because we are working hard on Tucson material doesn't mean
things have stopped in the lab. Construction is finishing on the
first cast of Appalachiosaurus,
a strange tyrannosaurid from Alabama. In the marine area, a few
marine turtles from Alabama are also going to be added soon. The
Edmontosaurus Big Ed is well
into restoration, and the final jacket of ORM, the
Tylosaurus kansasensis is
being prepared. Work on the Apatosaurus is proceeding well and
the mounting of the cast parts is imminent. Stop by soon and
have one of our Visitor Experience Guides show you these
exciting new projects!
