RMDRC NEWS:
Many thanks to all who showed up for the Member's Night on Fri, February
24th and for the large crowd who came on Sat, February 25th for the
Plesiosaur Mini-Symposium and heard some of the great scientists from
around the country discussing plesiosaurs. |
CURATOR CORNER:
News from the Lab: Greetings from a very delighted lab staff. February 25th, the RMDRC successfully hosted our first mini-symposium on plesiosaurs, with many experts from around the country. This event featured our newly assembled plesiosaur Dolichorhynchops bonneri (on exhibit) and our new Texas Tylosaurus “Sophie”. We hope that this is the first of many symposiums that the RMDRC will host in the future.
We are currently preparing various materials: a unique bony fish Ichthyodectes, a cartilaginous shark Cretoxyrhina, and pelvic material from a small theropod dinosaur Struthiomimus, the assembly of the skull of the Texas Tylosaurus is complete, and we have also also begun the molding and casting of the rest of the skeleton.

Giants of the Sea Revealed at the
Dinosaur Resource Center
The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center hosted a Plesiosaur Mini-Symposium on Saturday, February 25th, 2006 at its facility in Woodland Park, Colorado. We would like to thank our sponsors Vectra Bank http://www.vectrabank.com and Park State Bank http://www.psbtrust.com (both located in Woodland Park, CO) for making this event possible. We had a large and successful turnout of visitors to hear lectures by Dr. Larry Martin, University of Kansas; Dr. Glenn Storrs, Cincinnati Museum Center; Dr. Ken Carpenter, Denver Museum of Nature and Science; Michael Everhart, Sternberg Museum of Natural History; and Bruce Schumacher, US Forest Service. Many thanks to all these scientists for presenting the latest news on this and related specimens. RMDRC new specimens, the Dolichorhynchops bonneri, a rare short-necked plesiosaur, and the giant Texas Tylosaur “Sophie,” are currently on exhibit to the public for the first time. These prehistoric creatures swam in the oceans of Colorado over 70 million years ago. Come and see the new exhibits!
