RMDRC News

We are preparing for our most important scientific event of the year here at the RMDRC.  2009 is the 200 year anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth (February 12) and the 150 year anniversary of the publication On the Origin of Species (November 24).

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park, CO has a special event and exhibition planned to recognize his scientific achievements.  “Charles Darwin: The True Story” will be presented April 4 at 7 pm in the Ute Pass Cultural Center by guest lecturer Dr. John van Wyhe from the University of Cambridge.  Dr. van Wyhe is a historian of science at the university.  He is the founder and Director of Darwin Online, a Bye-Fellow of Christ’s College (Darwin’s own college) and a member of the British Society for the History of Science.

His research has focused on refuting the long-held belief in ‘Darwin’s 20 year delay’, the origins of the legend that Darwin discovered evolution from the finches while in the Galapagos, and more recently Darwin’s views on the origins of life.  Dr. van Wyhe is publishing three books and numerous shorter items on Darwin for 2009: an edited volume of Darwin's shorter publications (more than 250 in all), a co-edited volume of Darwin's Beagle notebooks, and an accessible illustrated book on Darwin and evolution.  Van Wyhe edits the most complete bibliographical list of Darwin's publications ever published.

He is also researching other aspects of Darwin's life and work including his time in Cambridge, helping to restore Darwin's college rooms and contributing to an iconography of Darwin.  Dr. van Wyhe is committed to sharing Darwin's work, Darwin scholarship and history of science with the wider public.  He lectures and broadcasts on Darwin and the history of science around the world.

As a special favor to our mutual friend, Angus Carroll, RMDRC is one of five planned stops in the US. He will also be speaking at Boston University, Chicago University, Oklahoma University and the Huntington Library in Los Angeles

Following the lecture, the new exhibit “Darwin & Dinosaurs” will be unveiled at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center.  These Darwin materials are part of the Angus Carroll collection and have never been on public display before.   The collection is valued at well over $1,000,000.The exhibit will include original Darwin letters, books, maps, and artifacts.  A scale model of “The Beagle”, built from the original architectural plans, will also be on display.  The exhibit will run through July 5.

Tickets for the lecture and exhibit unveiling are available online at www.rmdrc.com or at the RMDRC front desk.  Ticket prices for the lecture and unveiling are $25 per person, $15 for members.  For additional information, please visit www.rmdrc.com or call 719-686-1820. The Woodland Country Lodge is offering a discounted room rate for the weekend. Call their toll-free number 866-687-4466 and ask for the Darwin event discount.

On March 7, all Scouts (including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Brownies) and Scout Masters and Troop Leaders in uniforms may enjoy FREE admission to the museum in honor of Scout Day.

2:00pm - Steve Veatch with Veatch Geoscience will present "Introduction to Dinosaurs and Paleontology".

"Introduction to Dinosaurs and Paleontology" - Dinosaurs
are a spectacular example of a successful form of life, dominant for 135,000,000 years and still with us today. This presentation focuses on understanding what dinosaurs are, what happened to them, and how paleontologists learn from them. This  "hands-on" introduction to dinosaurs will look at the hot-blooded/cold-blooded debate, what's new with dinosaurs, and how a paleontologist works in the field and the laboratory.  Join Professor Steven Veatch and explore lost worlds where dinosaurs once ruled supreme.

He will include the "Milo the Mammoth Project", where visitors will participate in the visualization of the size of a mammoth using poles and string. Microscopes and slides will be available for hands-on viewing.

*This event is included with paid admission for all other visitors*

We have several speakers planned for Women’s History Month on March 14 and 15. See Geri’s column below for details.

The deadline for Dino Art 2009 is April 15 so get your artwork in soon. See website for details.

The Woodland Retail Alliance is sponsoring the first annual “Get Your Irish On” event with a $1,000.00 “Pot of Gold” give-away March 14 in Woodland Park. Activities planned for the day include a pancake breakfast, children and pets parade and kid’s activities outside at the RMDRC (weather permiting). The give-away game goes on all day at 25 businesses. Local restaurants and bars will be serving green beer and margaritas and having Irish food specials. Irish entertainment will be provided at the Ute Pass Cultural Center with door prizes and the Pot of Gold awarded at 7PM.  This is going to be a fun day for everyone! See www.rmdrc.com for details.

We have returned from our trip to
Tucson, Arizona, for the world’s largest gem, mineral and fossil show with a trailer full of goodies for the Prehistoric Paradise gift store. Our staff is working hard to get all of the new merchandise out as soon as possible. Plan to come by and browse the store soon.

Well, we all made it back from Tucson in one piece!  Overall visitation at the show was slow this year, but our new specimens Tylosaurus kansasensis "ORM" and Didelphodon " TAZ" were big hits with the show visitors.  And, YES, folks do read the signs with all the information I gather on each specimen for display at the shows.  There were lots of people looking for the shark bite marks on ORM throughout the two week run.

Savage Ancient Seas is heading back to Miami Seaquarium from March 7 through June 1.
Stars of the show this year will include the World's Largest Sea Turtle- Archelon and the Cope Elasmosaur.  The other half of the show is opening at the Reading Public Museum in Reading, PA on March 28 through June 28.  The world's second largest sea turtle- Protostega and Dolichorynchops, the star of the National Geographic Sea Monsters movie will be the highlights of their show.  Please send any friends or relatives in those areas to see our fantastic sea monsters!

Even with the slow economy, museums, zoos and aquariums are planning new and improved exhibits.  TPI is excited to be a part of these new projects.  If you happen to be in the Cartersville, GA area, be sure to see the new Tellus: Science Museum of Northwest Georgia.  The first Apatosaurus skeleton from our lab is on display there, along with a number of additional skeletons.  www.tellusmuseum.org

We are looking forward to a busy and fulfilling year in our labs.
Be watching for new specimens on the horizon!

News from the Lab

Things have slowed down quite a bit in the lab, but we still have a few interesting projects coming up. We have restarted low-rate preparation of Pete 3, our Daspletosaurus torosus specimen from central Montana. Daspletosaurus is a tyrannosaurid dinosaur from the Judith River Formation, and is approximately 75 million years old. This species of dinosaur is the closest relative known to Tyrannosaurus rex. As we prepare the bones, we are getting a good sense of just how huge Pete 3 was. Our current estimates are of an animal 36 feet long, standing 12 feet tall at the hips. Preparation of the bones are less than 10% complete, but we are inching closer to finishing every week!

We are also working hard to bring some new exhibits to the museum. Soon we will have a display of the sauropod (long-neck) dinosaur Camarasaurus supremus, from a quarry near Newcastle, WY. Our lab crew is also hard at work preparing our exhibit space for the upcoming Darwin exhibit, which promises to be very exciting. In the meantime, many of our existing exhibits will be upgraded and renovated. Stop by soon and see just what we've done!
