E-NEWSLETTER / May 2005

TPI Reaches New Heights - National Geographic:

Talk about hitting the big time! Triebold Paleontology, Inc. (again these are the employees inside the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center), is featured in the May 2005 issue under the article “Fossil Wars.” J.J. and Mike Triebold own Triebold Paleontology, Inc. in addition to the RMDRC. The article clears the air on how commercial collectors contribute to the science of paleontology. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous people in the fossil collecting trade and Triebold Paleontology, Inc. does all it can to correct this through public education at the RMDRC. The article discusses fossil collecting from all sides and a portion of the article along with pictures, additional articles, and videos is online at: http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0505/feature3/index.html. Purchase your copy today!

May brings another milestone – the one year anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center (RMDRC) to take place Memorial Day weekend! We are proud to reach this mark and thank the public for all of the support in the one year we have been open.

2005 is ramping up to be a spectacular year with events planned each and every month and the entire Memorial Day weekend. Our poster contest is wrapping up with thousands of entries (yes, this is correct) when it comes to a close and winners will be announced in May. It’s funny how some of these ideas just take off like wildfire! We have received entries mostly from Colorado but also as far away as Nevada and Canada!!

Look for a new outdoor sign for the RMDRC to be built this year. The design will be spectacular and quite visible on Highway 24 (the RMDRC is on Hwy 24). I can’t give too much away at this point just to keep this a surprise.

Again, from all of the staff of Triebold Paleontology and the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center - congratulations to J.J. and Mike Triebold for bringing this world class educational center to Woodland Park, Colorado and for recognition in the pages of National Geographic for 20+ years contributing to the paleontological community!

Sincerely,
Dave Ehlert
RMDRC Director

Dinosaur News:

Keep up to date with the latest news from the RMDRC and beyond......

In the article “Scientists find eggs in dinosaur mom,” we see there is much to learn on how dinosaurs grew eggs and later deposited them. Read more at http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/04/15/dinosauregg/index.html

“Scientists name new Southeastern dinosaur” collected in Alabama and Georgia. It seems like we hear a new announcement from around the globe of new dinosaurs every week! Read the entire article at http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=59525

In “Termite eater lived with dinos” we learn about a new discovery of a chipmunk sized animal with specialized teeth. The article can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4401447.stm

Curator Corner:

We are VERY excited about recent events in the lab.  The "Mystery Fish" is no longer a mystery. We are proud to announce the "Mystery Fish" is a giant fossil coelacanth, Megalocoelacanthus, from the late Cretaceous chalk of Kansas. This fish pre-dates the dinosaurs and was once thought to have gone extinct at the end of the Cretaceous with the dinosaurs, but it is still living today off the coast of Africa and Indonesia. To learn more about this "living fossil," visit:
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/vertebrates/coelacanth/coelacanths.html or
http://www.genomelink.org/coelacanth/.  Fossilized Coelacanth remains from the late Devonian period (375 million years ago) have been discovered on every continent except Antarctica.

We continue to prepare pleisiosaur (marine reptile) material from our site in Montana.  We are also busy working on various collaborative efforts with other museums and universities.

Off to the field... We have begun our 2005 field season!  Mike Triebold, RMDRC co-owner and founder recently traveled with Colin Gore to Kansas to prospect for new fossil localities; as well as, search for further "Mystery Fish" material. This trip was especially fruitful, yielding more "Mystery Fish." At the moment, a field crew is in Texas to continue the excavation of the Texas Tylosaur. We plan to return to Montana soon to continue the pleisiosaur excavation; as well as, begin a potential dinosaur site.

In the exhibit hall... Due to popular demand, the special exhibition of our T. rex will continue.

UPCOMING EVENTS
RMDRC's one-year anniversary

The RMDRC will be celebrating its one-year anniversary Fri., May 27 through Mon., May 30.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Center was founded by Mike and J.J. Triebold, of Triebold Paleontology Incorporated (TPI). All of the specimens contained in our exhibits are on loan from TPI.

Triebold Paleontology Inc. is an independent company that has been in operation since 1989. The company provides services for museums and individuals ranging from paleontological exploration, data collection, excavation, preparation, restoration, skeletal mounting, mold making and casting. Specimens and replica casts collected, prepared, and restored by Triebold Paleontology can be seen in museums the world over. Triebold Paleontology works with academic paleontologists to ensure the preservation of fossil specimens from North America.

Mike Triebold has been collecting fossils for more than 20 years and has been featured on The Learning Channel's "Paleoworld," the Discovery Channel's "Bone Head Detectives," Fox television specials, US News and World Report, Newsweek, National Geographic and others. Currently, Triebold Paleontology Inc. maintains two traveling exhibits, "Savage Ancient Seas" featuring marine reptiles from Kansas and "Savage Ancient World" featuring dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous (66 million years ago). RMDRC exhibits feature elements from both traveling shows. TPI currently has two additional facilities: One 11,000 square foot facility in Valley City, ND and the RMDRC here in Woodland Park, CO. TPI operates dig sites in South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas and Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Triebold have been residents of Woodland Park since 1996.
