Third Year’s a Charm for Dinosaur Resource Center

If you haven’t been to the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in a while, the Third Year Anniversary Weekend June 9 and 10 would be a great time to make the trip.  In addition to birthday cake and paleo lab tours, there are two BIG dinosaurs creating great photo opportunities in the entrance plaza to the museum. A life size Daspletosaurus and Styracosaurus stand guard at the entrance to RMDRC.  And that’s just what you see outside!

Opening in May 2004, RMDRC has attracted hundreds of thousands of dinosaur enthusiasts thru its front doors, to enter the prehistoric Cretaceous world where dinosaurs roamed the earth and huge carnivorous marine reptiles and fish swam in the oceans.  Many of these fantastic creatures are on display year round at RMDRC.

Two special guests will be here to celebrate with the RMDRC family.  World renowned paleo artist Larry Felder will present the awards for the Dino Art 2007 competition at 2 pm on Saturday, June 9 to be followed by his talk “Bringing Dinosaurs To Life.”  Felder’s amazing artwork can be viewed in the atrium area with the Dino Art winners.  Sunday, June 10 at 2 pm Dr. Kraig Derstler will present a talk on “Dinosaur Mummies, not Daddies!”

Activities over the weekend include “Inside a Paleo Lab” tours with RMDRC Curator Anthony Maltese, Dinosaur Story time, Discovery Cart with hands on fossils.  You can also bring your fossils from home for our staff paleontologists to identify for you all day Saturday and from 10 to 3 on Sunday.

You can also enter each day for a chance to win a FREE family membership. Be sure to join us for a piece of birthday cake on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.

Hope to see you here!

Sincerely,
JJ Triebold

President RMDRC

Lab & Field News

We are just finishing field work in Kansas, and boy has it been an excellent year! A record four mosasaurs have already been recovered and we have located up to three more still in the ground. We also discovered a Pachyrhizodus with preserved intestinal tract, and the fourth coelacanth discovered in the Niobrara Chalk since hunting began in the late 1860s.

Dr. Kraig Derstler has returned to work with us this summer in the field. However our resident paleotechnicians will still be hard at work in the lab all summer completing the Apatosaurus project, as well as working on any interesting discoveries that we bring back. I will also be leading tours of the paleo lab on June 9th and 10th during our 3rd anniversary celebration. Be sure to bring your fossils in for identification.  I hope to see you there!

From the Education Desk

Hello everyone…….For the past  two years you have seen me on the floor  either giving tours, answering your questions or just enjoying talking to you and your families.  I now have the privilege of being the Education Director along with continuing my very pleasant duties of Visitor Experience Guide.

One of my favorite things to do is to help with the activities in the Hands On area of the museum and to spend time with your children and all of their wonderful questions and stories about dinosaurs.

We are looking forward to your next visit with us and want to extend a special invitation to your whole family to come out to our 3rd Anniversary Celebration on June 9th and 10th.  Bring your friends!  We will have lab tours, storytime, the discovery cart with original fossils you can touch, craft activities, the winners of the art contest will be with us and a yummy “Birthday” cake to help celebrate this very special occasion. Bring in your special fossils and our Paleo Lab will be open both days to identify them.  Everyone is welcome!  We are looking forward to seeing all of our old friends and to making new friends.

Regards,

Geri LeBold
