RMDRC NEWS
Well the kids are out of
school and it's time to take that road trip, right?
Colorado is the destination for many visitors from all of the United States.
States that make up the majority of visitors are from Kansas, Texas, and
Nebraska. And would you believe Chicago is the number one out-of-state city that visits
us! Also, globally, Germany is at the top for visitation to this area - now
that's a long distance to take a vacation!
Last month saw visitors coming from all over and especially families. This
is a difficult time for us to be back in the lab working as most of these
paleo technicians are now working out in the field. So please excuse us if
there is little activity in the lab area behind the windows!
On a more positive note, our education deptartment staff is growing. Please join
me in welcoming Geri and Jolyn. You will see both of them working on the
exhibit hall floors and in time hopefully engaging in outreach programs.
We are also planning our summer education programs so sign up now as we have limited
spots left (call 719-686-1820 x112, Tracie).
There are too many summer events to list here so I ask you to visit this
link
http://www.rmdrc.com/events/events.htm to see our complete calendar.
Stay cool in the hot days and make it a point to spend more time with your
families!
Regards,
Dave Ehlert

CURATOR CORNER:
We just returned from fruitful prospecting
and excavating in South Dakota and Montana. We prospected for new fossil
sites in South Dakota, and we were able to recover some Triceratops
material, and other theropod material. In Montana, we began the
excavation of a juvenile hadrosaur dinosaur. The bone layer is in a
difficult location, so we will be returning in the middle of July with
more equipment that will allow us to gain better access to the layer.
Also in Montana, our TMBB site (a bone bed which contains plesiosaur,
mosasaur, fish, ammonites, and dinosaur material) excavation is
complete. We were able to recover the last bone material from this
interesting site.
In the lab, we are continuing the
preparation of original Triceratops material and further original Texas
Tylosaur (now nicknamed "Sophie") restoration, as well, as molding and
casting of the pliosaur type specimen Trinacromerum.
Cheers,
Nikki
