We had a great 4th anniversary celebration. The DinoArt winners enjoyed a special workshop given to them by guest artist Paul Hudson. Also, Paul gave two fascinating lectures for the museum visitors that day. Thanks to Paul for making DinoArt 2008 a great success!

Everyone loved the Anniversary cake served out in front of the museum.

We are gearing up for our 4th of July weekend. Military Appreciation Weekend will be July 4-5-6 with all military receiving ½ price admission with their appropriate ID. As part of Woodland Park Music Week, we’ll be rockin’ the dinos out in front of the museum with “MDT as ELVIS” July 5th from 3-5PM. Pre-show music will begin at 3 and ELVIS appears at 3:30. Don’t miss this free concert on the plaza in front of the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center!

A Petacular event is coming next month. On August 2nd and 3rd we will be hosting our 4th annual Critter Fest at RMDRC. Join us as we bring together animal rescue and support groups from the region. This annual event has been growing every year and this year we will have several new groups as well as some returning favorites. Our very own Visitor Experience Guide, Alan Patton, will be bringing his pet alligator, Rex, to introduce to you. Bring your pet to have it micro-chipped for only $20.00 by Pals Forever.  Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will be here with a wonderful opportunity to meet and greet a large variety of exotic animals. This is your opportunity to meet a number of pets looking for new homes. Adopt a rescue animal and receive free admission to the museum. As usual, the booths will be in the plaza in front of the museum with special lectures available inside as part of the normal museum admission price. This event is free to all members. Some of the organizations attending this year are:

From the Education Desk

I can’t believe that half of this year is already gone!  We have had many fun, interesting and educational events in the first part of the year.  Last weekend we had a booth at the Colorado Springs Gem and Mineral Show and the first part of June we also had a booth at the Imagination Celebration Show at Pikes Peak Center.  Both of these were great fun and allowed us to meet new people and introduce them to our museum.  It also gave us the opportunity to talk to our friends who visit us regularly to see what is new in the wonderful world of Paleontology.

DinoArt 2008 was a huge success. Paul Hudson was our guest artist this year and gave a wonderful workshop for all the winners of the contest.  Paul’s work is hanging for the summer in the museum and if you have not seen it yet, you are in for a treat.  What inspiring work!

Be sure and check our calendar for upcoming events like “Elvis” on July 5 and half price admission for military with I. D. on July 4th, 5th & 6th.  Put a special mark on your calendar August 2nd & 3rd for “Critterfest”.  We expect a huge crowd and a lot of wonderful animals (many up for adoption).  Search and Rescue will be here with demonstrations, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Colorado Wolf and Rescue will give a lecture and have a booth, and there will be many more groups and things to see and do throughout the two days of this exciting event.  Please join us.

July is a busy and fun month.   On July 4, 1884 France presented the Statue of Liberty to the United States and on July 8 in 1776 the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was held.  The first International Manned Space Flight took place on July 15 1975, and Etch-a-Sketch was introduced to the public on July 12, 1960.

Since July is also Family Reunion month, why not make a visit to the Dinosaur Resource Center a part of your reunion.

July 4th is a big part of this month’s celebrations.  Our Independence Day was brought about because of the growing unrest in the colonies commonly referred to as “Taxation without Representation”.  In April 1775 as the King’s troops advanced, Paul Revere would sound the alarm that “The British are coming”.  The battle of Concord and the “shot heard round the world” would mark the unofficial beginning of the colonies war for independence.  In June 1776, a committee headed by Thomas Jefferson, was formed to compose a formal Declaration of Independence.  Although the signing of the Declaration was not completed until August, it has been accepted that July 4th is the official anniversary of the United States independence.

Our Liberty Bell says it best, “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof”

I wish all of you a very safe and happy Independence Day.
