  RMDRC News

We have had a great year at the museum, in the lab and out in the field.

The museum is keeping visitors up to date with the latest discoveries in paleontology with a newly structured tour. Schools will be happy to see changes that reflect interactive learning in science. October hosts a Scouting Recruitment Day and a fun filled Halloween with the return of Mad Science.

In the lab we are building numerous cast skeletons for institutes around the world and have a backlog of new skeleton fossils that have to be prepared. Space is getting tight and we are surrounded with skeletons!

Our work in the field this year has produced an amazing theropod discovery thought to be a 30+ foot Daspletosaur, some possible Triceratops remains, and recently, an amazing diversity of discoveries out in the Kansas chalk.

Thanks for your continued support and stay tuned as we report the latest news from our recent discoveries!

Sincerely,
Dave Ehlert

  Lab & Field News

Winter is near as we had our first snow just over a week ago here in the Colorado mountains! With that said, we are approaching the close of another successful field season.

We are currently scouting out in Kansas and expect to bring a few more specimens to the museum. There have been new discoveries of fish, mosasaurs, and even a few pteranodons coming out of the chalk. The team is heading back mid-October to continue digging.

Work in the lab is continuing at a furious pace to complete a number of cast skeletons that are heading overseas.

The preparation of "Pete", the Daspletosaur will commence later in the year. This is a huge  theropod (meat eater) estimated to be 30+ feet!

From the Education Desk

Our new school and adult tour programs are well underway. The new tour programs give students and adults of all ages more hands-on activities and opportunities for learning about the wonderful world of the dinosaurs. The museum website has been updated with a “Photo of the Month,” featuring school group participants, and additional downloadable learning resources. In addition to expanding our school and adult tour programs, I have re-designed the RMDRC Paleo Patch Scout program curriculum to give Boy and Girl Scouts the best, most detailed and enjoyable experience possible. The curriculum now meets all of the requirements for the Brownie Girl Scout “Dinosaurs – Try It” badge and the Jr. Girl Scout “Dinosaur” badge. Completion of the Paleo Patch program entitles scouts to a RMDRC Paleo patch to display on the scout uniform and a certificate of completion.

I recently finished reading another wonderful book, “A Triceratops Hunt in Pioneer Wyoming” Edited by M. Kohl, L. Martin, and P. Brinkman. The book is a publication of the journals of Barnum Brown and J.P. Sams, two bone-hunters that embarked upon a Triceratops expedition in 1895. Page by page, I enjoyed the colorful events of the Wild West expedition and felt the excitement of being a bone-hunter. I hope you have an opportunity to read the book.
