Happy Halloween
Welcome to a beautiful fall in Colorado! In the eleven years that we have lived here in Woodland Park, this has been the longest and mildest
autumn we have experienced. You still have time to come see some spectacular color. Here are some scenes from west Highway 24.

September was a busy month with several events taking place in Woodland Park and at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. Our big day of the month was our first annual Family Day. With high gas prices, we can all use a little discount on entertainment. RMDRC did their part by offering $2.00 off all admissions on Family Day, Sept. 27th. We held our first Child ID Clinic in association with Shirley Colvard of Strategic Financial Partners, the WP Police and WP Family Medicine. This valuable service helps families get all of their child’s personal information together in a safe place in case of emergency.

Jon Zimmer, Walks Alone With Many Friends, was our Native American guest artist for the kick-off program for the POWWOW of the 21st Century. Jon’s beautiful artwork was on display at the museum and available for purchase on the day of the event. Jon and fellow Native Americans displayed their artwork, artifacts and customs throughout the city at Woodland Park businesses.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was on hand with animals and hands-on interaction. Story times, activity sheets and other activities kept the kids engaged.

Our staff is getting everything together for a week of Earth Science Week activities. We have several educational and entertaining speakers lined up.

Many activities are hands-on and the Wooly Magma project is limited to a certain number of participants so please sign up by calling 719-686-1820 X104 in advance to register for those classes.

11am Lecture- "Milo, the Mammoth Helps Reveal Teller County's Ice Age"
Experience an amazing paleontological dig and learn the basics of field paleontology as a mammoth is excavated from Ice Age gravels at the Florissant Fossil Beds.  The story of this mammoth, found by a student, is documented in a incredible PowerPoint lecture.  This interactive and hands-on program delivers the excitement of paleontology and the adventure of exploring ancient worlds through the fossil record and includes audience participation in making a mammoth out of string and poles. Don't miss the cutting edge science that allows this mammoth to tell us about his world.

Black’s Magic Halloween Show will perform on Sat. Nov.1st. at 1:00 p.m. and we look forward to seeing all of you in your creative costumes on both of these days.

Look at our website for further details.

October is Class Reunion month….why not suggest a fun filled and interesting day at RMDRC to your reunion committee?  October also celebrates Bilingual Child Month….we have new Spanish tours on Friday’s and Sunday’s, and it is Plan a Field Trip month….take an exciting trip back in time to 66 million years ago at our museum.

Earth Science Week is October 11-19 with the theme of “No Child Left Inside”.  I found some startling statistics as I was doing some research.  Did you know that fewer than 1 in 5 children walk or ride a bike to school, that children spend 40 to 65  hours a week attached to something electronic, that childhood obesity has increased from 4% in the 1960’s to 20% today, and that children have less time for unstructured, creative play in the outdoors than ever before in human history.  Some sad facts!

Richard Louv will be giving a lecture on Friday Oct. 3rd,at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs, titled “The Last Child in the Woods”.  He will also be doing a book signing after his lecture. His mission is to promote the importance of nature and outside activity in the growth and development of our children.  We will also have a booth at this show.  If possible try and attend this important event. It is well worth your time.

Please check our website for the many Earth Science Week activities we will be hosting.

“Healing the broken bond between our young and nature is in everyone’s self-interest, not only because aesthetics or justice demand it, but also because our mental, physical and spiritual health depend upon it.”    Richard Louv

Remember this is Positive Attitude Month and Oct. 25th is Make a Difference Day.

See you at our October events.

News from the Lab

It's been a bit empty in the lab these past few weeks, but things should start looking busier soon. Our crew in
Wyoming for the remount of the original Apatosaurus bones has finished up after a hard 2 months on the job. The result was impressive, and the new pose corrects some 50 year old anatomical flaws from the original mount. For the first time ever, the real pelvis bones are all mounted on the specimen. This was impressive considering that it added nearly 300 pounds of weight to the pelvic assembly. Though it was an interesting project, we are relived that it is finally finished.

Our field season has wound down too. The crews are now back in the lab working on original specimens, such as IAN, the Platecarpus planifrons that was discovered by Angus Carroll in the spring of 2007. Preparation of the Xiphactinus audax Mildred, the world's largest articulated bony fish, is progressing as well. Stop by in the coming weeks to see the finished product, or some new and exciting projects as they are worked on! Don't forget to ask our Visitor Experience Guides for the inside scoop on what's happening that day in the lab.
