RMDRC News
Another great month has passed and with it, some interesting weather. Last
week, we received an early present of 18" of snow in the form of a blizzard
(remember - this is October). We all chipped in the next day and with snow
shovels, a Bobcat, and snowplow, we cleared the museum grounds.
Halloween came a little early for our visitors as we hosted "Fun at the
Booseum" with activities and goodies for the kids on October 28th.
Recently, KRDO, Channel 13 in Colorado Springs installed a weather/traffic
camera at the museum. From wherever you are located, you can now see what
Woodland Park looks like by visiting the Channel 13 site
here. In the future, a weather station
will be installed to give you up to date information.
Our members are an important part of our museum and with that said, we
continue to improve this program based on your input. Included in this
newsletter is a link to a membership survey. If you are a member and have
just a few moments (approx. 5 minutes), please take the time to complete
this survey. Your feedback will help to strengthen our benefits and
programs.
Hope to see you in the museum!

Fun at the Booseum
We had a
large turnout for our "Fun at the Booseum" event on Saturday, October 28th.
Some of the events available to visitors were face painting, pin the tail on
the pumpkin, a "bone cart" for hands-on fun, and Mad Science was on hand for
3 shows.
All the staff were dressed for the occasion as were many of the visitors.

Gary with Mad Science put on 3 shows - giving the crowd some cool scientific
demonstrations.

Lab & Field News
Field
season is finally over for 2006, and it went out with a bang! In early
October our crew explored some new ranchland in Kansas, and within two days we
had to stop looking because we had already found so may new things. It was 95
degrees the first day, but by the time we finished the recovery of the
specimens, temperatures had dropped into the lower 50s for highs.
Recovered were
parts of a few mosasaurs (probably Platecarpus), many partial pteranodons, a
strange Ichtyodectes skull, and a very rare fish called Saurodon.
Preparation of these new finds has already begun. Ray Vodden, formerly of the
University of Chicago and the Field Museum has joined our prep crew, and is
helping us get into our massive backlog of real bone material. Keep visiting
this winter to see what progress we make!

We go where the fossils are! RMDRC Curator Anthony Maltese in the bucket.

When you find a
good fossil, it's hard to walk by.
Thanks,
Anthony Maltese

From the Education Desk
The school tour program
at RMDRC has been receiving rave reviews by students and teachers from
preschool to high school. Our new school tour program allows us to tailor
the museum experience to support a variety of learning objectives for
students of all ages. Recently, a pre-kindergarten teacher booked a tour to
introduce the letter “D” to her students. At the museum, the students
learned about our new dinosaur, a Daspletosaurus, Edmontosaurus a duckbill
dinosaur, and Dolichorhynchops a short-neck plesiosaur. The students were
fascinated by hearing what a paleontologist does at a dig site, and they saw
a dremel tool and drills in the paleo lab. They enjoyed several dinosaur
stories during storytime, and at the end of the tour, each student received
a Dromaeosaurus collector Cretaceous card and a dinosaur activity page to
take home. The teacher commented to me, “You gave us so much more than we
expected. Thank you for making the letter “D” fun and educational for the
children.” This is only one example of how we can create a memorable and
educational school tour that meets your educational objectives. If you have
any questions about our new school tour program, please give me a call.
Regards,
Pat White

Dinosaur News
Fossils keep popping up in the strangest of places. Here is an article of
numerous specimens found in the
Artic Circle.
Scientists keep coming up with new formulas for past extinctions and their
causes. Another example of this comes from
researchers at the
William Smith Colleges (Geneva, NY).
Using microfocus
x-ray computed tomography (microCT), scientists have found
possible evidence of cell division in
a fossil more than 550 million years old. |
