E-NEWSLETTER / December 2004

Tis' the Season:

Yes, we are deep into the shopping season and have about 20 days left. Santa will join us on Dec. 4th
and we have two very special shopping nights; Dec. 7th for "Ladies Only" and Dec. 21 for "Men Only". Both offer discounts and are great opportunities to check those people off of your holiday list.

Come out and see our fantastic ice dinosaurs - just outside the front entrance to the RMDRC. I'd love to provide pictures, but the ice blocks are being carved as I write this. When completed, there will be two new dinosaur additions to the center and will be here through the cold weather (3 to 4 months hopefully).

This is a great time of year for us to reflect back on what a wonderful summer and fall we had and plan our events for the upcoming spring time.

Happy Holidays to all of you and thanks for your continued support!!

Sincerely,
Dave Ehlert

Dinosaur News:

Keep up to date with the latest news from the RMDRC and beyond......

The first story is an interesting one that talks of an extremely rare find  pterosaur egg. Thus far, only 3 such eggs have been found. Click here to read what scientists are learning about this new discovery.

To date, there are approximately almost 1,000 species of dinosaurs that have been discovered. It makes one think about how many more are out there waiting to be discovered. Some, of course under our houses and cities, may never be discovered. So it is refreshing to hear discoveries like this story of a new dinosaur in Brazil or this story on an Indian dinosaur.

It seem like every month, new theories or evidence come to light on the demise of the dinosaurs. A new article discusses the number of dinosaur genera at the time of extinction. The viewpoint expressed in the article argues against declining dinosaur numbers prior to the extinction point and is quite interesting. Read more on this topic here.

Dr. Phil Currie's "Feathered Dinosaurs":

It was a rare opportunity to meet one of the most famous paleontologists in the world and well over 100 people attended his discussion on Sun., Nov. 7th.

Dr. Currie was recently visiting the Society for Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) meeting in Denver (along with paleontologist Eva Koppelhus, his wife  and co-author on many books) and was kind enough to share time with us.

How and when dinosaurs evolved feathers is a hot topic right now and many new discoveries are coming out of china. After the lecture, Dr. Currie signed books (we SOLD OUT) and ticket stubs for many attendees (including some very happy children)!

News from the Field:

In mid-November, we traveled back to south eastern Texas to find the remains of our massive Tylosaur (marine reptile) - possibly near or exceeding the largest ever found!

The majority of the skeleton has been collected including most of the skull. Anyone who has seen the cast of the famous 45-foot Bunker Tylosaur we have on display knows how large this skull is.

This specimen is in excellent condition. Four different species of shark teeth have been found amongst the bones indicating that it was fed upon by other sea creatures when it died.

Work continues in the lab and the field on this Tylosaur. When it has been completely recovered, prepared and restored the skull will go on display first in the RMDRC marine hall. Possibly to be followed later by the entire specimen.
