RMDRC NEWS:

We have been working very hard at the Dinosaur Center lately! There are numerous orders being created in the lab area of the center that will eventually go to museum all over the world. Visitors can see the dinosaurs being brought back to life as each molded piece is individually created and assembled. When completed these dinosaurs literally take hundreds, in some cases thousands, of hours to create!

There are new signs in the center just for kids. You will find these bright, animated guides around the museum to help the little ones learn some cool facts about dinosaurs. For example, "Did you know that 4 of the 17 Oviraptors found in Mongolia were found on nests?"

If you are in Woodland Park this week, join us in the annual Christmas Parade where the RMDRC will have a wonderful dinosaur float - you won't be able to miss us!

We at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center wish you and your family happy holidays!

Regards,
Dave Ehlert, RMDRC Director

CURATOR CORNER:

Just last week, we completed the skull reconstruction on the Polycotylus (short-necked plesiosaur). Mike Triebold (owner and founder) worked long hours to accurately restore the crushed 2-dimensional skull into a beautiful 3-dimensional masterpiece, which is rare among the fossilized elements of this marine reptile. Currently, we are remolding the restored cast copies and we anticipate assembling this massive skeleton in late December and have a copy of the magnificent creature in early 2006 on display for the public.

In addition, the original skull parts of the “Texas Tylosaur,” a.k.a. “Sophie,” (marine reptile) are nearly completely molded. We have many of our cast specimens being assembled for other various museums, including our Pachycephalosaurus, Xiphactinus, and Platecarpus.

Our Visitor Experience Guides have been helping mold and cast specimens in the lab.  During your next visit, ask one of our guides about some of the work they have been doing in the lab.

Cheers,
Nikki Hemmesch, Curator

Want to learn how to build a dinosaur out of chicken bones? Yes, that's right....chicken bones. Valerie Nakamura, our Education Director created our now famous "Chicken-suarus" from individual bones.

Measuring about 1 1/2 feet long, this is a great family project. Our very own Prehistoric Paradise store offers the book "Make your Own Dinosaur Out of Ckicken Bones" which guides you through the entire process. Get the whole family together for some chicken-riffic fun (Ok, enough chicken jokes).

We offer this book for just $13. WHo wouldn't want to build their very own Apatosaurus in miniature?
