RMDRC News
December is going to be a great month....
We are working on new hands on exhibits for all ages. How does a Triceratops
rib feel? What about a Duckbill dinosaur jaw? Touching is a key learning
element at the RMDRC.
Mid-December will bring in a NEW exhibit to the RMDRC. We are still working
on the details but you will see a brand new collection of small meat eating
dinosaurs. Come and learn about their habits and what science knows about
these little terrors. There will me a members event on Fri, Nov 15th - more
details to come in a subsequent mailing.
On December 29th, we will have our 2nd annual "Colorado Kids Free Day". Yup,
that's right...Adults pay and children are FREE. Don't miss this opportunity
to SAVE a few bucks and enjoy a day learning about dinosaurs.
Happy Holidays and I hope to see you in the museum!

A dinosaur makes an
impressive behind the tree gift!

Lab & Field News
Even though field season is over for the
year, we seem to be finding time to sit down and work on real bones. The
middle half of November was spent in Dallas, TX molding a giant sea
turtle. We're also molding a lot of new dinosaur, fish, and mosasaur
specimens which will go on display in February of 2007. Prep work on Pete
3 is moving ahead slowly, however we are nearing 50 individual bones
completed. You can see some of these in the newly updated display cases
outside the lab area.
As some of you may have noticed, the
Triceratops has left our exhibit hall. In its place will be a small
theropod exhibit, with 3d mounted skeletons of three small meat-eaters
that have never before been displayed in our museum, in addition to some
of our more familiar residents. And as always, if you have any suggestions
for new exhibits in the museum, email me your ideas at anthony@rmdrc.com

From the Education Desk
What are some of the things that children
can learn by visiting RMDRC? From social skills to critical thinking skills,
children can learn a great deal by visiting RMDRC. For example, when
children carefully look at the objects in the museum, and touch the hands-on
items, it acts as a springboard for new thoughts and ideas, and it
stimulates the use of critical thinking skills. Some of the critical
thinking skills include: comparing – recognizing similarities and
differences in objects, identifying – recognizing and grouping things that
belong together, and describing – giving verbal descriptions to the objects
viewed.
While visiting the museum, families can
have conversations with their children to encourage new thoughts and ideas,
and critical thinking skills. Good conversations involve listening carefully
to the children’s questions about the objects in the museum, and asking them
questions such as:
-
What does this remind you of?
-
What do you think will happen if…?
-
What words would you use to describe
this object?
-
How are these two objects different?
Same?
I have been working on several projects in
the museum. I just completed a new hands-on exhibit called “Touch the Past,”
where visitors can touch an original Triceratops rib, and much more. Over
the next few weeks, the children’s area will gain a new mini-library with
puppets and books and a new video viewing area. I am currently designing a
new hands-on exhibit in the marine room, and the final touches are being put
on a new theropod exhibit that is sure to fascinate all. A visit to RMDRC is
not only educational for children; it is a wonderful opportunity for adults
and families to have fun and relive the wonder of the incredible world of
the dinosaurs.

Dinosaur News
Scientists find
dinosaur trackways and compare them
to modern bird tracks in Wyoming.
Remember the Jurassic Park premise where
dino DNA was found in mosquitos
trapped in amber? Well here is an article on the discovery of DNA found in
insects.
Mass extinction near 250 million years ago
wiped out approximately 95% of marine species and 70% of land species.
Pretty scary! |
