RMDRC News

Merry Christmas

from the Rocky Mountain
Dinosaur Resource Center

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family. The RMDRC kicked off the Christmas season with a busy Friday after Thanksgiving. Thank you to our many members and first time visitors who brought their out of town guests to see us and kick off their holiday shopping at Prehistoric Paradise. Our buyer’s have ordered in many exciting and unique items for your gift giving this year. Don’t forget members get 10% discount on all of their shopping plus we will gift wrap your purchases free! A yearly membership to RMDRC is a great idea for the family.

Our Visitor Experience Guides have been as busy as Santa’s elves getting us ready for our Dinosauric Holiday event on Saturday, Dec.1st. They have our Christmas tree up and waiting for all the little dino-lovers to help us decorate by making make ornaments for it. Face painting, special story times and, of course, tours will be on the schedule for Saturday. Woodland Park will be lighting up with the “I’m Dreaming of a Pink Christmas” parade at 6PM. See Tracie’s column below for details.

We are excited to be having our own special tree lighting this year. It has been in our plans since we opened to have our palm trees out in front of the RMDRC lighted. This year we have accomplished the task! The palm trees will light up at 4:30 on December 1st to give a warm winter welcome to the parade. The palm trees will remain lighted permanently.

On December 28th we will be hosting our 3rd Annual Colorado Kid’s Free Day. This event is our opportunity to give families a chance to visit the RMDRC at a much reduced cost. Two children under 18 receive free admission with each paid adult admission. This has become a must do for all family’s during winter break. This year RMDRC will feature shows by “Cool Science” of Colorado Springs. Check our calendar of events for show times and details.

This month brings 2007 to a close. It has been a great year for us with new exhibits, new faces and new finds for Triebold Paleontology and the staff of RMDRC. We are looking forward to even more fun in 2008. Check the website for details and changing news on paleontology and from all of us at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center, have a safe and warm holiday season.

 Sincerely,
JJ Triebold
President, RMDRC

From the Education Desk

This month paleontologist Paul Sereno, from the University of Chicago, unveiled his latest discovery, the fossilized skeleton of a toothy plant-eating dinosaur. It has a body as big as an elephant with a small cow-size head and is called  Nigersaurus taquetiSereno and his teams recovered the fossilized bones on expeditions in 1997 and 1999 to a remote region of the Sahara Desert in the African nation of Niger.  It has taken 8 years for scientists to piece together bones of the many specimens to get a nearly complete skeleton.

This skeleton finally puts a face and body on an animal that science has known only from a few scattered bones found elsewhere in Africa in the 1950s.

Nigersaurus had a nearly perfectly squared-off jaw lined with 128 uniform front teeth.  The rows would have joined perfectly to snip plants that the dinosaur ate.  Sereno refers to this dinosaur as a Mesozoic cow.  Nigersaurus will be featured in a cover story on “Extreme  Dinosaurs” in the December issue of National Geographic.

Can you believe we are at the end of 2007?  This year went by very fast and so many memorable events took place at RMDRC.  We hope you were able to join us in many of them.

Starting off December will be Dinosauric Holiday on December 1st. We will have the lighting of the Palm Trees at 4:30 and Crafts and Holiday Themed Photos all day.  Please join us for this festive occasion.  On December 28th we will be hosting Colorado’s Kid’s Free Day along with two shows done by Cool Science.  This should be a really fun day!

Since the next newsletter is in 2008, I want to wish each and everyone of you a very happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year.

Happenings at TPI

It’s been a busy month for Triebold Paleontology and the lab.  A lot of progress has been made on the Apatosaurus molding and casting, as well as working on numerous other projects for clients.

With the Tucson Fossil Show only two months away, we’re already planning our exhibit pieces, which will include a 6 foot tall standing Pteranodon male and the new Protostega turtle, with a flipper span over 15 feet!  It should be an impressive display.

With the success of the 3-D IMAX film “Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure,” there have been a number of inquiries for the traveling exhibit “Savage Ancient Seas” to compliment the film.  A visit to RMDRC will allow you to see a number of these specimens up close and personal.  If you’re on the East Coast, the exhibit is going to the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk in January.  Send your friends and relatives to see it.!

We’ll keep you posted on our lab finds and show appearances throughout the new year.  Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Lab News

Our lab crew is coming up with some exciting new displays! We are designing an exhibit on dinosaur tracks for a Colorado museum, and part of the display will feature a life reconstruction of our Juvenile Edmontosaurus leg. Brandon has created it as half cast bone and half fleshed out, showing skin, toe hooves, and even musculature. Look for a copy to be placed in our museum in December!

We have also been busy preparing specimens that we collected during our "Mosasaur Summer". Ray discovered a Platecarpus ictericus skull and partial skeleton in May, and he has just finished preparing the main block. His exsquisite work has uncovered preserved ear bones, and even eardrums. I am currently preparing another mosasaur, a Platecarpus planifrons that was discovered by author Angus Carrol. This specimen is about 2 million years older than Ray's, and the skull is shaped a bit differently. Keep checking in for future updates, it is going to be a busy and exciting winter!

Captions: Platecarpus ear area, Life restoration of leg.
