Learning classroom science at the dig

Regis University partners with paleontologists for teacher education

One can learn a lot about academics from creatures who died millions of years ago. Education students at Regis University are now learning from dinosaur experts in the field at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center (RMDRC) near Colorado Springs.

The RMDRC is consulting on a new guided independent study program in the teacher education program where students work on paleontological studies with RMDRC Assistant Curator Nikki Hemmesch.

The course, called Dinosaurs: A Vehicle for Discovery, explores the history and changing theories regarding the study of dinosaurs; and uses this information as a vehicle for understanding and discovering concepts of science, history, mathematics, English, and other subjects.  The goal of this course is to provide teachers and student teachers with the knowledge and tools to implement dinosaur material into their classrooms as a means to reach their students in new and exciting educational approaches on a wide variety of concepts.

“This RMDRC and Regis University joint endeavor provides Regis with a new resource for our Guided Independent Study program in education, and it aids the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center’s aim to educate students and teachers alike,” said Sue Davies, the Regis University faculty advisor in the teacher education program in Colorado Springs.
