Girl Scout Days with the Dinosaurs

On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low organized the first U.S. "Girl Guide" troop in Savannah, Georgia, with 18 members in two patrols named the Carnation and White Rose.  Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to join the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in celebrating the 93rd Anniversary of the first Girl Scout meeting at “Girl Scout Days with the Dinosaurs” Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13.

Guided tours through the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center are scheduled for 9:30 am, noon and 4 pm on Saturday and 10:30 am and 1 pm on Sunday.  RMDRC curator Walter Stein will present a lecture “So You Want to Dig Dinosaurs” to aspiring paleontologists at 2:30 pm Saturday.  Assistant Curator Nikki Hemmesch will talk about “Digging Dinosaurs” on Sunday at 2:30 pm.  Scouts will also be able to make fossil casts during the event and experience how real paleontologists prepare fossils in the lab.

Geologists from Cave of the Winds in Manitou Springs will also be lecturing on geology in the Rocky Mountain Region Saturday at 11 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm and again on Sunday at noon and 3 pm.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center offers a paleo patch program for scouts throughout the year.  “Girl Scouts are an active part of our community,” stated RMDRC Director Dave Ehlert.  ”This weekend’s activities allows us an opportunity to provide a program loaded with education and fun for the scouts without the whole troop having to be present to participate.”

There will be a special admission rate of $4 per scout in uniform/vest during the two day event.  The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center is located at 201 S. Fairview “At the Palms” in beautiful Woodland Park, just minutes west of Colorado Springs.  For additional information contact the RMDRC at 719-686-1820 X112 or go online to www.rmdrc.com.
